Families that have children often look for good additional safe places for their children to play in. This is in addition to the traditional family rooms and basements play areas that many parents use. While most families love their kids to have a yard to play in as well as play rooms, during inclement weather and when the children are very young it can be important to have a great place where they can play and be safe and still get some fresh air. That is why many families have looked to expand their children’s play area by creating a garage space that is designed to be childhood safe.
However, one of the concerns for garage area play spaces is that it can cause damage such as cracking and chipping in the concrete flooring over time because the area is exposed to a great deal of wear and tear from childhood traffic and toys. The good news is, there are ways to provide a great play space in a garage and protect the floor of the garage at the same time.
Epoxy Sealants for Garage Floors
One of the more modern ways homeowners have enhanced garage floors to provide additional play space for kids and still provide protection for the concrete flooring by finishing off part or all of the garage cement floor with an epoxy sealant. The addition of epoxy flooring coatings can make a garage floor much more durable against spills, cracks or damage that can be caused by aging and wear and tear.
What Is Epoxy Flooring Coatings?
Epoxy is a coating that covers the surface of concrete flooring. It is designed as a sealant and protective coating that helps ensure the concrete does not crack or crumble as readily under extended use, traffic and toys that can degrade regular concrete over time.
In addition, Epoxy Flooring Coatings are chemical-resistant and stain-resistant which is also good for the more traditional garage users. This durable concrete flooring coating also beautifies and adds luster to the garage flooring space making it a pleasant warmer looking place for children to play.
Is Epoxy Sealant Safe for Pets And People?
Many parents that would consider using epoxy coating on a garage floor have some concerns about whether the epoxy coating is safe since it is a chemical based coating. The overall answer is that epoxy coating once dried is usually very safe for children, pets and people. However, it should be noted that as with all coatings, children, pets and adults can have allergic reactions to them. While it is not common, people that are more allergy prone to different chemicals may have a reaction to it.
In order to ensure safety for pets, children and adults after the sealant is first put on, there are guidelines that should be followed. It is generally advised that pets, children and adults not spend any time in the garage area while it is drying. The initial curing period is 48 hours but free play with pets and children is safest to start after two weeks of drying and curing of the floor epoxy is completed.
